Classroom, Course Work, and Communication Expectations
Before School, Room 505:
· This room will be a quiet zone before school until after the announcements every morning.
Absences: MINIMIZE THEM!
- Please recognize that you have a choice- which days to visit colleges, vacation days, whether or not you attend a music practice during my wrap day. Because these are your personal responsibility, please know it is the expectation that you still submit work when it is due, you obtain the assignments from Schoology or a friend in class, and that you receive credit for what you do on time and well. Absences are not an excuse to not complete work. Senior year is stressful, I understand as I, too, have been there. You do have control over the choices you make and, therefore, have the ability to plan effectively and properly. See me prior to obtaining a failing grade should you need guidance and/or assistance. Coming after the fact will only cause you to become more stressed and fall further behind.
AP may NOT be the course for you if you are habitually absent from school. Please know that it will be a challenge to obtain an "A" in the course if you are absent more than 5 days during the course.
- If you know you are going to be gone, school policy is to get your assignments in advance and turn them in on time or before you go. (I will try to accommodate you, but not all assignments may be available.) Look on Schoology.
- Make-up essays or other work should be completed during scheduled FLEX time Office Hours. Please indicate in the Flex comments why you will attend and what work you will need me to have prepared for you.
· Budget your time accordingly. Keep up. Many of the assignments are to prepare for work in class the next day or in the very near future – watch Schoology carefully to make sure you understand what’s up.
· Besides having wonderful explorations of literature and discussions about life, your success on the AP exam and your preparation for success in college are my goals for you and your goals for yourself in electing an AP English class senior year. You rock! Keep your chin up! You are almost to the finish line.
Late Work: There is a 10% penalty per day for late work. You may receive credit for up to 5 days late, after that, the assignment will be a zero.
· Late work will not be accepted for some assignments if it becomes irrelevant and already discussed/covered in class.
· Turn late work in my hands; do not leave it on my desk or anywhere else unless specifically instructed. Your absence must be EXCUSED in order to make-up missed work. Otherwise, the assignment will be a zero.
Computer stuff:
· When an assignment is to be typed, you must leave enough time in your schedule to deal with any technology problems. Take all reasonable precautions against annoyance and disaster. For example, make sure you have toner for your printer and enough paper.
· Save your work early and often. Make backup copies of your electronic files as you work. Don’t delete your files until the course is over. My go to resource for this is Google docs.
· Please do not expect me to print your work, let you use my computer to print it, e-mail me your papers (unless specifically instructed to do so), etc.
Complete all Readings:
Homework is just that- Home Work. Read the materials and take notes. For each assignment, come to class prepared to discuss at least one aspect of the author's style and the literary device(s) the author uses to enhance the overall purpose of the text.
You must have notes in hand prior to discussion...this is the evidence of your readings and understandings.
Take initiative and exceed expectations, after all, you are a literary scholar!
Scheduling Conference Time:
In order to better prepare you for college, should you have a question specific to your personal assignments, grades, etc... please schedule a time to conference with me outside of the class time (Flex). This will help to better prepare both of us for the discussion.
Use of Electronics:
Electronics are strictly prohibited in class unless I provide them or instruct you to use your own. All phones MUST be off and away between the class bells. If the device is even out on your desk, it may be taken and a referral may be written.
